For the 1934 Italian Grand Prix on September 9, Tazio Nuvolari had the new 6-cylinder, 3.1/2 litre Maserati to drive on the improvised and deamnding circuit at Monza,. Finishing fourth, Nuvolari might have well had finished 2nd but for running the race with an empty hydraulic reservoir, and drove the race using his hand brake. The reservoir had been emptied before weighing-in to enable the car to qualify and an anonymous somebody had neglected to refill it.
